The Interactive Core Curriculum on Tuberculosis

Purpose
The Interactive Core Curriculum on Tuberculosis presents basic information about tuberculosis (TB) for clinicians. An update for clinicians is critical to today. Guidelines for patient management and public health practice have been revised and new methods of diagnosis have been introduced.

Audience
The audience for this course includes clinicians who are caring for persons with or at high risk for TB disease or infection.

Goal
To provide clinicians with basic information about TB, including the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of latent TB infection and TB disease.

Chapter 1 – Tuberculosis in the United States

  1. Identify ways in which TB is spread.

  2. Describe the pathogenesis of TB.

  3. Identify conditions that increase the risk of TB infection progressing
    to TB disease.

  4. Define drug resistance.

  5. Describe the classification system for TB.

Chapter 2 - Transmission and Pathogenesis of Tuberculosis

  1. Identify high-priority groups that should be tested for LTBI.

  2. Identify appropriate TB testing procedures.

  3. Identify considerations in TB testing.

Chapter 3 - Testing for Latent Tuberculosis Infection

  1. Describe the components of a TB medical evaluation.

  2. Identify the major components of TB diagnostic microbiology.

Chapter 4 - Diagnosis of Tuberculosis Disease

  1. Candidates for the treatment of LTBI.

  2. LTBI treatment regimens.

  3. LTBI treatment regimens for specific situations.

  4. Identify components of patient monitoring at baseline and during the
    treatment of LTBI.

Chapter 5 - Treatment of Latent Tuberculosis Infection

  1. Describe TB treatment adherence strategies.

  2. Identify antituberculosis medications.

  3. Describe treatment regimens for TB disease.

  4. Describe patient monitoring.

  5. List common adverse drug reactions to antituberculosis medications.

Chapter 6 - Treatment of Tuberculosis Disease

  1. Describe how to determine the infectiousness of a TB patient.

  2. Describe components of an effective infection control program.

Chapter 7 - Infection Control in Health Care Settings

  1. Identify recommendations for the use of the BCG vaccine in the U.S.

  2. Interpret TB reactions in persons who have received the BCG vaccination

  3. Identify BCG vaccination contraindications.

Chapter 8 - BCG Vaccination

  1. Describe TB prevention and control strategies in communities.

  2. Describe the role of health care providers offering direct services to
    TB patients.
