The
learning objectives of this audiotape include: identification of at
least four risk factors that should be explored when children are
screened for TB: understand the procedure for evaluating a young
child exposed to adult contagious TB; appreciate the relationship of
a history of BCG vaccination and placement or interpretation of the
tuberculin skin test; learn the steps for proper placement and
interpretation of the tuberculin skin test and the current
recommendations for treatment of latent TB infection and active TB
disease.
Ann
M Loeffler, a pediatrician and the presenter of this audiotape
divides the presentation into the top ten common myths amongst
physicians relating to diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis in
children. These include common everyday quandaries that she resolves
in a lucid manner. The relationship between BCG vaccination and PPD
test is explained in depth and the technique of placing and reading
PPD test is adequately reinforced. The treatment of Latent TB
infection (LTBI) and active TB has also been explained in detail.
The presenter also lays stress on rational use of anti-TB drugs. The
accompanying handbook in addition to reinforcing the contents of the
audiotape also contains algorithms for Tuberculosis Exposure and
Risk Assessment, examples of Pharmacy flow sheets and a page on
links to other important resources on the Internet.
The
audiotape is a cost-effective self-training tool and qualifies for
CME credits.
