They affect sexually active persons of either sex, and that children may become infected as a result of vertical transmission (or as a result of sexual abuse). The health care providers need to follow a sound STD case management plan. The objective of this workbook is to introduce the learner to such a protocol.
The first module introduces the reader to size and scope of the epidemic of STDs.
The second module explains the problems of etiological approach to STD case management and introduces 'Syndromic Approach' as an alternative.
The third module discusses essential steps of history taking and examination, which constitute the essence of 'Syndromic Management'.
The fourth module takes the reader step-by-step through each of the Syndromic flow charts.
The fifth module enunciates critical aspects of educating and counselling.
The sixth module is all about tracing and treating a patients' sexual partner.
The Seventh Module offers simple statistical approach to reporting that protects patients' confidentiality and can be adapted for use in different settings.
The workbook can be used for individual as well as group learning. The learning process has been made interactive by inclusion of 'Activity Sheets' in each section, which encourage the learner to draw upon his earlier experiences. Each activity sheet is followed by an explanatory discussion.
