 Facing the challenges of HIV/AIDS and STDs-a gender based response (in Hindi)

JAGORI a New Delhi based NGO has produced the Hindi translation of 'Facing the challenges of HIV/AIDS and STDs-a gender based response' originally published by Royal Tropical Institute, The Netherlands and Southern Africa AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS).
The tool comprises of a resource book and accompanying teaching aids to conduct training sessions. The resource book and training material have been partially adapted to Indian conditions.
The objective of the tool is to inculcate a gender sensitive attitude in the context of HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) among policy planners, project developers and those implementing them in the field.
The resource book discusses issues like relationship between STDs and HIV/AIDS and the extent of their spread; what is meant by a gender sensitive response; why are women more vulnerable to HIV/AIDS and STDs; how can men and women share the responsibilities for risk
reduction; and at the end there is a checklist to evaluate the index of gender sensitivity in your own work situation.
The content of the learning material has been enriched by personal experiences and testimonials. Examples of the successful gender sensitive initiatives have been narrated and strategies employed have been explained.
The training material consists of eight cards, each dedicated to a specific activity. These include organizing a HIV/AIDS and STDs work group; identifying issues related to sexuality and stigmatization; discussing sensitive issues in relationships; relationship amongst boys and girls; narrating stories to discover gender sexuality and sexual health; and assessing issues at community level.
The tool is an excellent resource for learning a gender-sensitive approach towards HIV/AIDS and STDs and organizing training sessions in different settings. It is a useful material both for the trainer and trainee.
