This manual is an outcome of a national workshop on HIV/AIDS care organized by Society for Service to Urban Poverty (SHARAN) and TEAR-Fund UK.
The manual begins with chapters that provide basic information to the reader about Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), its modes of transmission and means of prevention. The process of gradual progression to full-blown AIDS in a HIV positive person is also explained in an easy to understand style.
The authors have elucidated the management of common symptoms like fever, diarrhea, itching and rashes, which more often than not weigh down an AIDS patient. The treatment of wounds, common mouth and throat problems and cough has also been described. There is a separate chapter on Tuberculosis, most common opportunistic infection in AIDS patients.
The use of commonly used antibiotics and drugs for fever, nausea and vomiting, pain and skin infections besides Vitamins and mineral supplements has also been briefly dwelt upon.
The most noteworthy aspect of the manual is the chapters on extending psychological, emotional and spiritual support to AIDS patients. The issues related to preparing them and their families for final moments and role of religious leaders is also discussed.
The manual is useful tool for health care and community workers and family members providing care to AIDS patients.
